You can only rename files or folders of which you are the owner. To find out if you are the Owner on a Unix system, use the command ls -la. Equivalent commands exist on other systems; if you are unsure of the command, ask your system adminstrator.

To rename a file or folder, follow these steps:

Select the file or folder.

Click on the Rename button in the toolbar (File, Rename). The Rename File/Directory dialog box displays to show you the current name and ask for the new name.

Type the new name in the New Name text box and click on OK.

  • If you get an “Unable to complete rename operation” error message, check that you have entered a valid new name. Check also that you are the Owner of the file or folder that you are trying to rename.
